For our August 2026 East of England Sustainable Building Network event, we welcomed guest speakers from Lanpro. Hannah Broughton, Director of Ecology, Graham Robinson-Hodges, Regional Director of Planning, and Eleanor Delaney, Principal Ecologist, joined us for the session.
The event brought together professionals from across the construction industry for breakfast, networking and an informative presentation on Biodiversity Net Gain.
Lanpro provided an overview of BNG and explained how it is measured using habitat size, condition, distinctiveness and strategic significance. The presentation also explored the Biodiversity Gain Hierarchy, planning application requirements and the different options available for delivering gains on site, off site or through statutory credits. Our speakers discussed regulatory changes taking effect from 6 August 2026, including updates affecting smaller sites, temporary developments and self-build housing.
They also explained changes to the delivery hierarchy for minor developments. Practical case studies showed the value of early collaboration between ecology, planning, landscape architecture and design teams. This approach can help retain valuable habitats, improve site layouts and achieve the required biodiversity uplift. The session also highlighted the importance of considering BNG from the earliest stages of a project. Leaving it until later in the planning process can create avoidable challenges.
