Restoring Turf Fen Mill: Conservation, Ecology and Natural Materials
On Monday 5 October, Cannon Clarke Group hosted the latest East of England Sustainable Building Network event at The Oak Bar and Terrace in Norwich. The morning brought together professionals from across construction, property and sustainability for breakfast, networking and a presentation exploring the restoration of Turf Fen Mill.
We were pleased to welcome Paul Kings of Kings & Dunne Architects and Andrew Farrell of the Broads Authority, who shared their insight into conserving a historic windpump within the sensitive landscape of the Norfolk Broads.
Using the ongoing restoration as a case study, Paul explored the challenges of surveying and repairing the structure while protecting its historic fabric and surrounding environment. The presentation considered how detailed material specification and careful management of contractor activities support a sensitive approach to conservation.
Natural and locally sourced materials formed an important part of the discussion, including timber, brick, mortar, linseed paint and replacement metalwork. The session explored how appropriate materials and traditional repair techniques can help preserve the structure’s character while supporting its long-term care.
Andrew also provided insight into the ecological and access considerations of the site. With access only possible by boat, the project presents unusual challenges for transporting materials, organising works and protecting the surrounding habitat. The presentation also highlighted collaboration with the Broads Authority, Norfolk County Council and Historic England.
Thank you to our speakers and everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion.

The East of England Sustainable Building Network forms part of the UK Sustainable Building Network and takes place every two months, providing opportunities to share knowledge, discuss sustainable building practices and make connections across the industry.
Our next event will take place on Monday 7 December 2026, where Ian Seeley of Ellisons will discuss Sustainability in Construction Contracts, including sustainability provisions in NEC and JCT contracts.
