Our team have been appointed to convert and extend a disused barn in Essex. The scheme will transform it into a high quality, single-storey residential property.

This barn conversion scheme proposes to transform a disused agricultural barn in Essex into a high-quality, single-storey dwelling. The proposal includes the extension and conversion of the existing and partially collapsed structure, bringing it into use as viable housing stock. The proposals make effective use of previously developed land in line with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

Privacy

Our team developed a strategy to design an exceptional family home, ensuring privacy for the client while maintaining the best views of the site. We achieved this by re-establishing the existing massing and lowering the site levels to the east.

The barn conversion design includes carefully considered openings to the east of the building. This allows us to utilise the site’s surroundings and capture the best possible views over the golf course while maintaining privacy. This also restricts visibility from the golf course. Retaining walls also create a visual boundary to shield the private amenity further.

The design incorporates a sunken patio, which will be formed by raising the surrounding landscape for an obscured view. Additionally, the design adds a new extension wing containing an open-plan kitchen, dining room and garage. This will enclose the site and protect the client’s privacy more from views from the public road.

Our design for this project features a lifted dormer for extra ceiling height while retaining the original roof trusses. It also features a side extension accommodating a new entrance and garage, offering more living space. Floor-to-ceiling glazing will infill the openings to the east, creating a greater sense of space.

This barn conversion in Essex will create a contemporary yet sensitive home. Our design re-establishes the original form while integrating thoughtful extensions. It maximises natural views while shielding the dwelling from overlooking, creating a refined addition to the local housing stock.
