Construction Started on Hotel Refurbishment Project
Work has started on a refurbishment project at the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich to create a new guest suite. The client appointed Cannon Clarke Group to convert a disused first-floor room into a bedroom with en suite facilities, bringing an underused space back into service.
Our team worked with an interior designer and the wider project team to develop the proposals. The Cavell Room was previously used as a function room but has more recently served as storage, subsequently falling into disrepair. The existing floor has become unsafe and sections of the decorative timber panelling and plaster ceiling require repair. The fireplace surrounds, exposed ceiling beams and sash windows will remain part of the restored room.
Our design proposes a new bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The proposed works will strengthen and level the floor and repair the wall panelling and ceiling. The design also includes a new independently structured bathroom pod, separate from the existing wall and ceiling finishes. Additionally, the alcove to the east of the room will become a wardrobe with new joinery doors. The design includes new drainage, electrical and ventilation services, heating and cooling.
The Cavell Room forms part of the Grade II listed hotel. It required a design that would bring the room back into use while conserving its historic features. We prepared the listed building consent application and detailed construction information, coordinating the interior design with the structural work and building services. Our team also submitted building regulations information and took on the Principal Designer role under the CDM Regulations.
It is great to be working on a hotel refurbishment project in Norwich and to see this conversion move onto site. We enjoyed working on the alterations to the Bentley showroom garage at the Maids Head Hotel. We now look forward to seeing the new accommodation take shape. Construction is due to finish before December 2026.
