CCA1438 / Mixed-Use Conversion, Timber Hill
Barn Conversion / Fritton
Cannon Clarke Group have developed proposals for a contemporary barn conversion and extension, transforming a vacant agricultural barn, within the Fritton Conservation Area.
Cannon Clarke Group have recently submitted a planning application for the conversion and extension of a vacant agricultural barn complex. The project proposes the transformation of the existing, dilapidated structures. Converted into a single, self-build dwelling that balances environmental responsibility with architectural sensitivity.
The existing barns present both opportunities and constraints. While the site benefits from established access and land , the current structures are unsound, with an existing party wall and close proximity to high-level electricity cables adding technical complexity. The proposal respects the site’s rural character while introducing modern interventions that clearly distinguish between the new and old elements.
The design draws inspiration from the local vernacular and agricultural context. The design features a mix of materials, including both horizontal and vertical black timber cladding to differentiate the retained and newly constructed elements connected by a contemporary glazed link. The link provides a dual function of allowing light into the building as well as defining an external courtyard. Black aluminium windows and doors have been chosen to complement and enhance the material palette while providing durability.
In line with our commitment to sustainability, this contemporary barn conversion project has been designed following our in-house sustainability toolkit. A guide based on twelve key principles supports the creation of a healthier internal environment for the occupant, reduce the operational energy use, and consider the broader environmental impact of the building. This includes the use of high-quality materials with low embodied carbon, careful orientation and glazing strategy, and provisions for renewable energy sources.
The proposed dwelling has been thoughtfully designed to integrate within its rural context without imposing on the surrounding landscape. It reflects a balanced approach that protects the character of the local area while producing a modern and sustainable home from a previously unutilised plot.
